Live reviews
The 2nd last time I had seen Renee Geyer was 18 years ago at The Continental in Melbourne. I'd been reading her autobiography at the time.
It made me laugh. I identified firstly as a "Say I love you" RG fan (being 11 when it came out) with RG being an instant 'apple of my eye' then about 15 yeats ago I became a "So lucky & Ready to deal albums" RG fan, with good reason. Then last week I caught one of Renee Geyers Camelot Lounge shows having heard conflicting whispers about her live shows. I thought to myself - "I'm going for the spectacle or the soundwave whichever is better" I was surprised that both were great. Her delivery was emotional, powerful and sensitive and her rhythmic and melodic sensibilities were very informed by the overall branches of soul, jazz & blues probably in that order, and her band consisted of highly proficient musicians at the top of their game which RG has always managed to snaffle for her immaculately produced albums. I was confronted that singing in front of me was someone who had been honing her craft for as long as I've been alive - 50 years. Go see her, you'll be glad you did. She's a living legend. The pearl in the Aussie musical oyster. The Apple of my ear xo we want to hear that blues album that's on the drawing board RG :-)
