The first time I witnessed the Crazy World of Arthur Brown was at the Rhodes Centre in Bishops Stortford in September 1968. I can still see it clearly in my mind all these years later.
It was magical.
One of the best live gigs I have ever been to.
The band came on first and played a couple of instrumental tracks and suddenly from the back of the stage Arthur appeared with his arms outstretched and a multi-colored robe hanging all the way along his arms and almost down to the floor. He was wearing the fire helmet. It was incredible. The man is such a genius. So underrated. Tracks like Kites are truly beautiful. I can't wait to see him live again.
For two amazing nights I was fortunate enough to be a visitor in the world of the crazy Arthur Brown and I experienced the God of All Hell Fire. My advice to anybody out there is
if you have a passport go to Sweden and see him on this incredible tour and if you don't have a passport get one
It's easy to say that Arthur Brown was brilliant, as always, and he was, but this show was even better than I expected. My personal highlight was Kites that was given a suitable Japanese twist thanks to Angel Fallon. A fantastic evening.
When Fire came out I wore out my 4/8 track tape playing it every time I got in my Volkswagen in the late ‘60s. When the next album came out, Arthur Brown solidified my thoughts that he was music genius.
