Formed in 1986 by guitarist and vocalist Todd Park Mohr, drummer and vocalist Brian Nevin and bassist and vocalist Rob Squires, the three played and studied together at the University of Colorado before naming themselves Big Head Todd & The Monsters in 1987. The trio began playing shows and touring around Denver, Fort Collins and Boulder in Colorado, and developed a consistent following enough to set their sights outside their home state out across the West Coast of the U.S.
The band’s debut album “Another Mayberry” was released in 1989 at the same time as forming their own label Big Records, and followed the year after by “Midnight Radio”. Big Head Todd & The Monsters became known for their considerable live shows, often drawing packed audiences, which led to the live album “Big Head Todd and the Monsters Live” in 1993. The same year marked the band’s most significant success with the album “Sister Sweetly” recording with the Prince affiliated producer David Z. The album earned platinum status, peaked at No. 1 on the U.S. Heatseekers chart and spawned three rock charting singles “Bittersweet”, “Broken Hearted Saviour”, and “Circle”.
The band subsequently released the self-produced album “Strategem” in 1994, which reached No. 30 on the Billboard 200, and the Jerry Harrison – formerly of the Talking Heads – produced album “Beautiful World” in 1997. The album produced the hits “Boom Boom” and “Resignation Superman”, and was followed by the group’s second live album “Live Monsters” in 1998.
Big Head Todd & The Monsters subsequently released the albums “Riviera” in 2002 and “Crimes of Passion” in 2004, followed by another live album “Live at the Fillmore” also in 2004. All of the band’s albums from here on were released on their own Big Records including “All the Love You Need” in 2007, “Rocksteady” in 2010, the blues-orientated “100 Years of Robert Johnson” in 2011 and 2014’s “Black Beehive”.
Big Head Todd after 27 years continue to put on an awesome live show with their mellow, blues infused rock & roll sound. The band continues to create energy from their fans and long term followers.
