There aren't many bands that would get me out of Salford and down to a pub in London on a rainy Sunday night in October. To be fair, the pub was The Lexington and as a venue it is very pleasant.
Live performances by Sad Lovers and Giants are collectors items, so its worth the bus/2 hour train journey/tube/walk to see 5 talented musicians conjur up some post-punk magic. This band have been together, (on and off), since the 80's and play with a one-ness that younger bands rarely achieve. Close your eyes and the fusion of Nigel Pollard's precision drumming, Ian Gibson's entertaining bass play, Will Hicks sublime keyboards and the gorgeous rhythm guitar of Tony McGuiness will take you back to the early 80's. Their evocative, dreamy, post-punk sound, (not disimilar to their contemporaries The Chameleons), is accompanied by Garce on vocals, saxophone, guitar and various percussion, all adding to a soul-stirring soundscape.
Two hours and two encores were enough for the band, Ian got cramp, but I'm pretty sure the appreciative crowd would have stayed all night.
