Born in Beirut, Lebanon, at the age of three Carl Abou Samah and family became refugees in Dubai, UAE due to the Lebanese civil war. Influenced by his mother’s piano playing and father’s guitar, drums and Middle Eastern oud playing, Samah took a strong interest in music during his time at UAE’s International School of Choueifat. Having acquired the nickname ‘Wolf’ from friends in his basketball team, at the age of 17 Samah immigrated to Montreal, Quebec where his began writing and producing for others artists. Following collaborations with the likes of Bubatique and Gabrielle Destroismaisons, Karl Wolf won the Félix Award at the 2001 L’ADISQ for “Best Mix and Sound of the Year”.
As a result Wolf was invited to joined the Canadian pop group, Sky. Karl Wolf subsequently became Sky’s new lead singer in 2002, where he wrote, recorded, and produced much of the band’s third studio album “Picture Perfect” in 2003. The singer-songwriter also contributed to the reality TV show “Star Académie” in 2003 and 2004, the success of which proved to Wolf that he should pursue a solo career.
Following the disbandment of Sky, Wolf went solo, releasing his debut studio album “Face Behind the Face” in January 2006. Led by the singles “Butterflies”, “Desensitize”, and “Referee”, the record broke the Canadian Top 100, and paved the way for his sophomore album “Bite the Bullet” in late 2007. The record itself proved only a modest success until the release of its lead single, “Africa”. The remake of the world famous Toto track, featuring hip hop artist Culture, made significant waves on the Canadian charts, rising to No. 1 on the iTunes Digital Downloads chart. Also finding favour in Japan, the single peaked at No. 20 on the Japan Hot 100. The record’s second single “Carrera” stalled at No. 39 on the Canadian Hot 100.
Proving his last release on EMI, Wolf issued his third studio album “Nightlife” in November 2009, which was followed by his Universal Republic debut, “Finally Free”, in 2012. Drawing influence from dance-pop, house, dubstep and R&B, the record spawned the singles “Ghetto Love”, “Mash It Up”, and “DJ Gonna Save Us” and features Three 6 Mafia and P. Reign. The full-length “Stereotype” appeared in 2014, hosting artists including Timbaland, Fatman Scoop, and Classified. The following year the singer-songwriter released his sixth studio album “WOW”, led by the single “Not Over Me Yet”.
