Having formed over forty years ago, Dragon are now on their third stint together as a band, following break ups in 1979 and 1998 (the latter coinciding with the sad passing of former vocalist Marc Hunter). Reforming again in 2006, Dragon have completely transformed since they created their first album all those years ago, with only lead singer and bassist Todd Hunter (brother of Marc) remaining from the original crop of Dragon. The New Zealand based band have been performing with fair regularity, especially during 2013. They played the Great Kiwi Beer Festival 2014 in Christchurch which was certainly one for the die-hard fans of the rock group. Every song was greeted with a chorus of sing-alongs from their devoted audience, most of whom have been following Dragon for decades. The song 'Are You Old Enough' started with a solo on the keyboard as the massive crowd chanted the name of the song. As soon as the rest of the instruments kicked in you could feel an instant energy around the stage, with everyone dancing around and bellowing the lyrics at ear shattering volume. On stage, the guitar and drums were as perfect as ever, with Pete Drummond getting involved with some of the vocals. Another great song from the set was 'Rain' which certainly had a lot more rock and roll influence and was a classic Dragon performance. It's certainly a spine tingling moment when there are tens of thousands of people around you shouting 'If you go out in the raaaaaaaaaaaaaain'. If you ever have the opportunity, you NEED to see these guys live to get a realistic idea of how powerful and effective their music is.
