BreakBot, Tatyana Jane, and Busy P

Breakbot (the stage name Thibaut Berland goes by) is of the French school of Electro House that gave us Sebastian, Justice, and Mr. Oizo among others (I’m sure Daft Punk must have at some point, somehow been a part of the family tree too). There is a dose of heavy, sweaty, Disco Funk that runs through all Breakbot’s music, and after hearing some of his mixes, in particular the supremely silky and loved-up ‘Lazy Sunday Selecta’, I figured he must play a pretty mean set as a DJ. My chance to be proved right finally came at an Ed Banger night (the label was celebrating it’s 10th anniversary). First off, something I really like about Breakbot live is that he does a lot of manipulating and mashing up with the samples and beats in the moment, so there’s more of a live element to it than a straightforward DJ set. This might explain why (some say) there were a few lulls in his set, but on the flip side, I think it makes him more interesting to watch as a performer, with his Jesus-at-the-decks look. ‘Baby I’m Yours’, probably his best-known tune and a slice of sunny, feel-good funky disco, was the high watermark of an irresistible wave of euphoria.

Pedro Winter, aka. Busy P, is a huge name in the music production and management world, as well as being a fantastic DJ himself. As manager of Daft Punk from 1996 to 2008, he has a vast scope of experience in the electronic pop industry, and now manages Cassius on his own label.
Busy P has an awesome back calalogue of EDM and house tracks to his name, and I first started listening to his music when he released the EP Rainbow Man back in 2007. The tracks are funky and catchy, and the kind of not too heavy electronic music, and it just makes you want to dance. I’ve been following Busy P since then, and have loved everything he’s released, especially Still Busy, which is epic, especially with Thunderbird Gerard featuring on the tracks.
I was hyped to see him live, because I’d heard that he puts on an awesome show. I definitely wasn’t wrong there, from beginning to end without a moments break I was dancing along to the awesome tunes with my arms in the air. His stage presence is electric and he had everyone captivated by his skilful abilities on the decks. He’d put his arms in the air and get everyone clapping, and take his headphones off slightly to get a sense of the vibe in the venue. Great DJ, and a great performer, something the industry needs more of.
