Show was awesome, to the point and raw: love the vocal harmonies! And turns out their percussionist bailed on them last minutes and instead they had 2 percussionist come up and play the songs without ever hearing them! AMAZING!
The Love Language add to a long and storied line of what I like to call “Concept Bands”. These are bands and artists that formed or started writing music as a direct result of a traumatic or otherwise earth-shaking incident. There are more than a few of them, Passion Pit started as a result of the lead singer making an E.P as a valentine’s day gift for his girlfriend, on the other side of the spectrum, My Chemical Romance formed after Gerard Way witnessed 9/11 first hand and it galvanised him into doing something with his life. The Love Language come somewhere in between the two, singer and songwriter Stuart McLamb recorded an series of demos after a hardcore drinking binge brought on by a nasty break up, they then turned out to be so good that he formed a band around them and set to work bringing them to life. It’s just as well that he did because from such dark origins comes absolutely joyous indie-pop that has so much life and soul that it seems only logical that one would see it live. The chemistry the band shares belies its origins as a solo project, there’s a gang mentality here that most bands would kill to have and one only needs to take in a single show of theirs to see that this is a band of true companions. It’s noisy, fun and life affirming, everything a good rock show should be. Highly recommended.
