Described by that magazine as “the leader of the new sound of house”, it’s clear that Jones is widely considered a genuine pioneer in the dance world. He and the sound he’s developed have been earmarked as being at the vanguard of a movement that has aimed to break away from the shackles of the minimal techno sound that emerged from Detroit in the nineties and had come to dominate perceptions of the genre; instead, Jones’ take on techno is a very different beast, aiming for lush instrumentation and a greater focus on melody to make techno, a genre long known for its clinical approach, seem warmer and less calculated.
His project with his friend Lee Foss, Hot Natured, has exposed an entirely different side of Jones’ approach - one that has been proven to be chart-friendly, with their single ‘Benediction’ having made the top forty in his native UK. His festival resume, meanwhile, proves that he straddles both the underground dance world and the mainstream music sphere; he’s played at Tomorrowland and Glastonbury to a rapturous response, respectively the most revered events in those two fields, and he’s also achieved the seal of approval for any dance artist - frequent summer residencies in Ibiza.
DJ sets are always a lot of fun, but when you see someone perform who is so influential and well known as Loco Dice, you know the whole show is going to absolutely blow you away. He’s a DJ who really reads the vibe and mood of the audience, so you never quite know what you’re going to get when you see him perform live, but you know it’s going to be great! His hip hop sound that he performed at the recent show was exciting, funky, and great to dance to.
He opened the show with Menina Brasillera, and had everyone dancing straight away. He had a microphone, and kept calling out to the audience to join in and dance along, although we didn’t need much encouraging, as everyone was going crazy from the word go!
He played a great selection of tracks, from new work on his mix tape, to the older original sounds. He also threw in some covers and remixes, which of course kept the audience on top form! He worked off of us in the crowd really well, bouncing around energy which was just incredible.
Watching a DJ who knows hoe to give a great performance as well as simply playing their tracks from their booth is something incredible to watch, and witnessing Seth Troxler’s performances with his quirky dancing and great interaction with the audience was awesome. His techno and house fusion was perfect to get the audience going, and form the moment he shouted ‘I wanna hear everyone screaming, and see you all dancing’, the crowd were totally dedicate to his performance He’s played at massive clubs all over the world, and know exactly how to please an audience. His variation between his remixes, tracks with samples, and original tracks is great, and he kept the audience enthralled from start to finish. He played through the entirety of Aphrika EP, which he worked on with Wolf & Lamb, and even got some of us in the audience to sing along to the samples into a microphone he had.
She show was over 2 hours long believe it or not, but it flew by with all the dancing and the energy that was radiating from Troxler. It was a fantastic show, and great to see some genuine talent from a DJ for once!
