Born 7 July 1991, Alesso hit the EDM world fast and hard, catching worldwide attention in 2011 for both his remixes and originals by some of the largest EDM artists, among them were Avicci, Tiesto, Kaskade and Swedish House Mafia. His biggest hit becoming the remix he did of “Pressure,” originally by Nadia Ali, Starkillers & Alex Kenji; in fact, the remix became one of the most played EDM songs in 2011. Alesso easily hit the Top 100 DJ list for DJ Mag in the number 70 spot, earning him MTV’s EDM Artist to watch in 2012.
With all this attention, 2012 turned out to be another great year for the young artist. In April he made his first BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix, moved up to the 20th spot on DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJ list. His collaboration with One Republic’s Ryan Tedder, and fellow Swedish DJ Sebastian Ingrosso resulted the global chart topping track “Calling (Lose My Mind).”
Using the forward momentum from the previous year, Alesso found himself on top of the charts again in 2013 with his collaboration with mega DJ Calvin Harris and Hurts for “Under Control.” In 2014 he found himself making the rounds of the world’s largest EDM festivals such as Ultra Europe Festival in Croatia and Electronic Daisy Carnival (EDC) in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The pair met in Cologne, Germany and after hitting it off they decided to try their hand at making music together. Realising that their combined talents meant musical gold, the pair became Cosmic Gate and began producing fresh tracks and remixing existing music.
Cosmic Gate’s initial successes were in their native Germany where tracks "The Drums", "Mental Atmosphere" and "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" were all top 100 tracks. The duo quickly began winning increasing numbers of fans and the release of their fourth single, “Exploration of Space” went to number 12 in Germany and entered the UK singles chart at number 29.
Picking up significant buzz from these initial tracks, Cosmic Gate then went on to release “Fire Wire” in 2001. The track stormed the UK singles chart and peaked at number nine.
Cosmic Gate has released six albums, “Rhythm & Drums”, “No More Sleep”, “Earth Mover”, “Sign of the Times”, “Wake Your Mind” and “Start to Feel” between 2001 and 2014, with their initial two albums being their most successful.
The duo is well known throughout Europe and they have placed in DJ Magazine’s Top 100 DJ’s feature multiple times. Fans love them for their remixes as much as their original content and Cosmic Gate is well known for its remixes of artists such as Tiësto, Deadmau5 and Israel Kamakawiwo'ole.
Alessandro Lindblad shortened his name to Alesso, remixed some of the best EDM DJs in the world, and made a big name for himself. I was really lucky to catch his set at Ultra Music Festival this past summer. His set was packed but my friends and I were able to push our way closer to the stage. He really built up anticipation with the synced lights and an increasingly fast beat, leading up to a countdown type beat. Compared to others, his set was fairly mild in a good way. His music raged but his visuals were mostly just lights and smoke screens.
Surrounded by tons of girls with flower crowns and tutus, we danced through the hour long set, not slowing down for a second. As the energy of the crowd sustained, so did Alesso’s. Every so often, there would be a dancer on stage next to Alesso’s table. He would also hype up the crowd by talking to them inbetween. In his set he also included his best remixes like “Pressure.” The best part of his set though, was his originals that he slightly changed to make the set unique. Midway he played “Years” and closed out with “Calling (Lose My Mind).” By the time his set was over, everyone was super exhausted from the great music and raging.
Great show with high energy and awesome music. These guys throw down and their visuals are awesome! The venue was packed the entire night. Can't wait to see them on bigger stages in the near future.
Most notably known for hits such as FireWire and Exploration Of Space, Cosmic Gate are a fantastic dance duo. I've been listening to them since Rythm & Drums in 2001, I'm a massive fan and see them every chance I get. Every show I have been too I've been blown away and get more and more excited. These guys are premium DJs in today's day and age and keep it coming. Their latest album, Start to Feel, is simply fantastic as well with songs Yai, Falling Back and Coming Home, being a few of the standouts. These guys don't stop for anything and certainly know how to make a statement amongst today's plethora of DJ's.
Most EDM nowadays is all about the drop and high energy beats with crazy syncopation that I don't care for. The true masters of trance are Cosmic Gate and they keep it coming! Since I first saw them live they've mixed up the set to feature the latest and greatest in the DJ world as well as keeping their classics and throwing some of their newest material in. A solid diverse set list that any true fan, or newbie, will enjoy immensely. Cosmic Gate certainly get around and if you get the chance it's worth far more than the price of admission to a club or event to see these guys alone. Don't miss out!
