Shantanu Mukherjee began his career singing advertising jingles when he was a child, so it's kind of understandable that he'd want nothing to do with it pretty soon after he started. However, in the South Asian film industry, it's standard practise for singers to make entire careers out of singing songs used in film soundtracks and musicals. So a couple of years after he had given up singing, Shaan returned in 1989 to sing a single line in the song "Kitni Hai Pyari Pyari Dosti Hamari", and decided as a result to pursue a career as a playback singer. Ironically enough, it was while he was looking for work as a playback singer that he made a huge splash as a pop star, teaming up with his sister Sagarika and signing with Magnasound to release the huge hit albums “Naujawan” and “Q – Funk”.

By 2000, Shaan was a bona-fide celebrity, with several successful solo albums under his belt, songs featured in some of the biggest films of the year and collaborations with western stars like Mel C, Samira Said and Blue. As the decade went on he became one of the few Indian singers to enjoy huge success all over the world, even releasing “Shuruat” the lead single for the Hollywood picture The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. To this day, he remains one of the most successful Indian singers of his generation, with sold out shows all over the world attesting to his huge appeal. For that, he comes highly recommended.
