A recital by Daniil Trifonov—called “the most astounding pianist of our age” by London’s The Times—is always a highlight at Carnegie Hall. His extraordinary range is showcased in a recital that begins with Handel’s Suite No. 5 in E Major (“The Harmonious Blacksmith”), followed by Stravinsky’s sole piano sonata and Schubert’s beloved “Wanderer Fantasy,” a powerful musical depiction of a stranger’s lonesome search for meaning and happiness in a strange land. Trifonov’s stylistic exploration continues throughout the program’s second half, featuring selections by Brazilian composers Villa-Lobos and Camargo Guarnieri, Argentine composer Ginastera, Dominican composers Juan Francisco García and Landestoy, and Trifonov’s own original Tango.
