With this performance, Igor Levit kicks off his complete Beethoven piano sonata cycle, spanning two seasons at Carnegie Hall. His recording of the cycle has earned extraordinary acclaim, including an OPUS KLASSIK, The Sunday Times’ Record of the Year, and Gramophone’s Artist of the Year, with the latter praising Levit’s “sense of being completely at one with Beethoven himself … From the very opening of the first sonata … he draws you into Beethoven’s world of fierce unpredictability.” Tonight’s program features Piano Sonata No. 1, the legendary “Waldstein” Sonata, the boldly innovative Piano Sonata No. 12, and Piano Sonata No. 25, which Levit calls a “tricky little sonatina … full of crazy surprises” (The Guardian).
