Born in New York City, however raised in North Carolina, Hayes took an early interest in traditional American and Irish music, later joining the band, Boys of Bluehill. The singer-songwriter’s musical journey took Hayes across the Black Mountain Music Festival and down through Charleston, South Carolina, before settling in San Francisco, California. In 1999 Sean Hayes issued his debut album, “A Thousand Tiny Pieces”, on the independent label Snail Blue Records. Three years later the musician released his follow-up, 2002’s “Lunar Lust”, to warm reviews from the critical press.
Once again raising his profile, Hayes’ third full-length album “Alabama Chicken”, represented his most successful album to date. The record was supported by regular touring across San Fransisco and the U.S., after which the singer-songwriter returned to the studio to record his fourth studio album. In 2006, following a three-year wait for fans, Hayes issued “Big Black Hole and the Little Baby Star”. Earning rave reviews, the record was led by the single “Fucked Me Right Up”, which also gained exposure as a featured song on the television series “Bored to Death”.
After contributing his song “Turnaroundturnmeon” to the Natalie Portman curated anti-poverty compilation “Big Change: songs for FINCA”, Hayes recorded the duet “Ballantines” alongside Aimee Mann. The full-length “Flowering Spade” appeared in 2007 featuring the likes of Ches Smith, Devin Hoff, Ara Anderson, Rob Reich, and David Boyce. Three years later, the singer-songwriter released his sixth studio album “Run Wolves Run”, which was led by the television-featured single “Powerful Stuff”. In 2012, Hayes issued his seventh full-length record “Before We Turn to Dust”.
