Ancient Forward

Ancient Forward grew out of a question Joel Laviolette has been exploring for years: what happens when the deep cyclical structures of traditional Zimbabwean mbira music meet the open-ended improvisation of a psychedelic jam band?

Joel has been studying and performing Zimbabwean mbira music since 1994, including several years living in Zimbabwe and learning directly from master musicians. Those experiences continue to shape everything he does. Ancient Forward is about taking the musical ideas that have captivated him for decades and allowing them to unfold to wherever they want to go.
