Rainbow Chan et Shewita

Music In Exile is proud to present an exciting double headline show from Hong Kong born, Naarm-based experimental pop artist Rainbow Chan, and Eritrean-Australian R&B singer-songwriter Shewita.

Two bold performers, Shewita and Rainbow come hot off the press from the respective release of their debut EP and third album, armed with new live shows set to be debuted together. Both weaving live instrumentation with electronic elements, the night will span heady, beat-focussed tracks to soulful slow burns and ethereal, Jazz-influenced ambience.

Rainbow Chan’s third record ‘The Bridal Lament’, was first developed as a solo theatrical work and draws on Chan’s Weitou ancestry (the first, Indigenous settlers of Hong Kong). The album reimagines a historical pre-marital ritual, in which brides publicly wept and sang before leaving their families, forming a striking body of work that connects this ancestral ritual with contemporary pop, performance and storytelling.

Where most debut EPs play it safe, Shewita’s Canvas sprawls deliberately. A project held together not by a single sound but by the strength of her voice, the singer-songwriter moves fluidly across the five tracks. Rich, stacked vocal arrangements run through every song, sitting against a production that shifts from warm and funk-inflected to cool and club-ready without ever losing its footing, all with a gleaming, metallic sonic aesthetic.
