Prior to the formation of Poets of the Fall, lead vocalist Marko Saaresto had played in the rock band Playground, for whom guitarist Olli Tukiainen wrote a number of songs. Sarasota and Tukiainen subsequently founded the Poets of the Fall in April 2005, after which they were invited by script-writer Sami Järvi to composed an ending theme for the video game “Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne”. Produced by Markus “Captain” Kaarlonen, who went on to join the band, the video game exposed Poets of the Fall to a large international audience.
The band released their debut single “Late Goodbye” in June 2004, paving the way for their second single “Lift” in September. Both singles charted within the Top 15 on the Finish Singles chart, and led to the band winning the YIeX’s “Fresh Newcomer of 2004” award the same year. Poets of the Fall’s debut studio album “Signs of Life” followed in January 2005, debuting at No. 1 on the Finish Albums Chart, and winning the Emma Award for “Best Debut Album” of 2005. Later certified platinum by the Finish IFPI, the record catapulted to band to national notoriety, as well as to success elsewhere in Scandinavia.
Led by the title track in March 2006, Poets of the Fall’s sophomore album “Carnival of Rust” was issued in April that year. Once again topping the Finish Album Chart, the album eaned a string of positive reviews aided by the subsequent singles “Sorry Go ‘Round” and “Locking Up the Sun”. The No. 1 full-length album “Revolution Roulette” appeared in March 2008 followed by extensive touring which included the band’s first tour of the U.S. In 2009 in order to read their fans in India, Poets of the Fall issued a best-of compilation “Best of Poets of the Fall”, compiling their biggest singles and tracks to date.
With wider distibution including to Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, the band’s fourth studio album “Twilight Theatre” was released in 2010. Led by the No. 18 single “Dreaming Wide Awake”, the album was released on the band’s Insomniac Records and spawned favourable reviews from critics. Poets of the Fall’s fifth studio album “Temple of Thought” was issued in 2012, marking the band’s first album not to reach No. 1 on the albums chart, followed by “Jealous Gods” in September 2014.
Poets of the Fall may be a ragtag rabble of a band, but when it comes to live performances, they are nothing short of professional. The rock group, who hail from Helsinki, Finland, have members who were in a variety of stylistically different musical projects before their formation in 2003, have enjoyed ten years of success, since their first release “Late Goodbye” was used as the closing credits theme for the video game “Max Payne 2.”
Since then, POTF, who consist of Marko, Ollie and Markus have gone on to six, chart topping full-length albums, with their most recent being 2014’s Jealous Gods. Their achievements could probably be attributed to their classic pop rock sound, which blends a variety of guitar-based genres into enjoyable tracks.
On their current Jealous Gods tour, POTF have pulled out all the stops, with a phenomenal light show to accompany their epic, riff heavy sounds. Vocalist Marko sounds amazing live, delivering each note to near perfection whilst he bounces around stage in a white vest. The rest of the band all play their part too, bringing songs such as a “Carnival Of Rust” and “Running Out Of Time” to live with impeccable mastery of their instruments.
