The Hollywood Bowl is an open air music theater in Hollywood, California, with a seated capacity of 17,376. The bowl has a distinctive arched shell covering the stage area. Behind the stage are the Hollywood Hills and to the Northeast is the Hollywood sign. The Bowl hosts hundreds of musical events each year and is home to the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra during the summer months. The Bowl opened in 1922 on the site of a natural amphitheater, previously known as Dairy Dell. A pyramid style shell was added and built upon and improved over time. In 1927 and 1928 famous architect Lloyd Wright (son of Frank Lloyd Wright) designed and constructed two shells. The first was deemed to be acoustically excellent but was de-constructed at the end of the year, being seen as too avant garde. The second Lloyd Wright shell was made out of fiberglass. The next shell was built in 1929 by the Allied Architects. This shell would stand until 2003. The acoustics were considered to be good, but not as impressive as those achieved by Wright. In 2003 a new shell was constructed, incorporating elements of the previous shells whilst improving acoustics.
